This fossil ape was discovered in 1910 in Siwalik, northwest India, and was named after an Indian god. G. Lewis discovered a similar fossil in 1935. According to E. Simons and other scholars, Sivapithecus belongs to the broader Dryopithecidae, which were widely distributed in Eurasia and Africa from the Miocene to the Pliocene, and is said to be the ancestor of modern apes. In the 1970s, a skull fossil was discovered, and its phylogenetic relationship with the orangutan in particular became the most likely candidate.
