A deciduous shrub of the Tilia family rarely cultivated in Japan, it grows to a height of 1-2 m (illustration). The twigs and petioles are densely covered with yellowish-brown short hairs. The leaves are alternate, diamond-ovate or diamond-shaped, pointed at the tip and broadly wedge-shaped or rounded at the base, 3-11 cm long. The margins are densely covered with irregular small teeth, sometimes with indistinct shallow lobes, and have short, star-shaped hairs on both sides. The cymes are opposite the leaves and bear 3-5 pale yellow flowers about 1 cm in diameter.
