Lu Zhi; Lu Chih
[Raw] Tenpo 13 (754)
[Died] Eitei 1 (805)
A famous Chinese prime minister in the mid-Tang Dynasty. Born in Jiaxing, Suzhou (Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province). His courtesy name was Jingyu. He passed the Jinshi examination at the age of 18. He served as a local official, and was summoned to the central government by Emperor Dezong. He played a major role in suppressing the Zhuxi Rebellion in 783, and the imperial edicts he drafted are said to have inspired the generals and soldiers. He wielded great influence as an aide, and was known as the Minister of the Interior, intervening in important national decisions. In 792, he became prime minister, and often reprimanded Emperor Dezong for his foolishness, but was slandered and exiled to Zhongzhou (Ding'an County, Guangdong Province). There, he wrote the Lushi Jigenfang (50 volumes) for people suffering from epidemics. In 805, Emperor Shunzong ascended to the throne and he was pardoned, but he died of illness. The Complete Works of Lu Xuangong (24 volumes), a compilation of memorials and other documents, is a valuable document for research into the Tang dynasty.
