Hanaudo - Hanaudo

A perennial herb of the Apiaceae family (APG classification: Umbelliferae). The stem is 0.7-1 meter tall. The leaves are broad and pinnately compound, with 3-7 leaflets. The base of the petiole swells into a sheath. In May-June, it produces large umbels that bloom with white flowers. The outer petals are larger and have two lobes. The fruit is flattened and broadly obovate with broad wings. It is similar to the Angelica genus, but the dark brown oil ducts visible on the outer surface of the fruit in the Angelica genus do not reach the base of the fruit. It grows in the shade of trees in mountainous areas and is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The name comes from the fact that it resembles an angelica tree overall and produces conspicuous white flowers. The O-Hanaudo is larger and is distributed in Honshu, Hokkaido, the Kuril Islands, eastern Siberia, etc. The genus name Heracleum is named after the Greek god Hercules.

セリ科（APG分類：セリ科）の多年草。茎は高さ0.7～1メートル。葉は幅広い3～7枚の小葉からなる羽状複葉。葉柄の基部は鞘(さや)状に膨らむ。5～6月、大形の散形花序をつくり、白色花を開く。外側の花弁はより大形で、2裂するのが特徴である。果実は扁平(へんぺい)な広倒卵形で、広い翼がある。シシウド属に似るが、ハナウド属は果実の外面にみえる暗褐色の油管が果実の基部に達しない。山地の木陰に生え、本州、四国、九州に分布する。名は、全体がウドに似ており、白色のよく目だつ花をつけることに由来する。オオハナウドはより大形で、本州、北海道、および千島列島、東シベリアなどに分布する。属名Heracleumは、ギリシア神ヘラクレスにちなむ。
