Kawai Koichi - Kawai Koichi

Musical instrument manufacturing engineer. Born into the family of Surugaya, a wheelwright in Hamamatsu that had been in business since the Edo period. At the age of 11, he joined the Yamaha Organ Factory, where he devoted himself to developing musical instrument manufacturing techniques together with Yamaha Torakusu, who completed Japan's first organ. At the age of 14, he self-taught himself on the action (the string-striking mechanism), the biggest challenge in the domestic production of pianos, and made a major contribution to the development of the musical instrument industry. In 1927 (Showa 2), he founded the Kawai Musical Instrument Research Institute (now Kawai Musical Instruments Manufacturing Co., Ltd.).

楽器製作技術者。江戸時代から続いた浜松の車大工「するがや」の子に生まれる。11歳で山葉(やまは)風琴製造所に入所し、日本初のオルガンを完成させた山葉寅楠(とらくす)とともに、楽器製造技術の開発に力を尽くした。ピアノ国産化における最大の課題であったアクション（打弦機構）を、14歳のとき独学で完成したのをはじめ、楽器産業発展に大きく貢献した。1927年（昭和2）河合楽器研究所（現河合楽器製作所）を創設した。
