Plain paper copy

...there are two methods: the indirect method (PPC, short for plain paper copy), which transfers and fixes the image to another recording medium (such as ordinary paper). Chester F. Carlson (1906-68), an American patent attorney, began researching ways to make the transcription process more efficient by machine. In 1938, he succeeded in giving a static charge to a layer of sulfur molten on a zinc plate by frictional charging, and developing this with ruthenium powder (a type of electroscopic powder) to obtain a photographic image. He invented the basic principle of today's electrophotography and obtained a patent (1940).
