Ryuho Oeda

Ryuho Oeda
Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. Sencha tea master of the mid-Edo period. Founder of the Oeda school of incense. Original surname Oe. Called Iwata Nobuyasu. Born in Settsu. Pen names include Shuzen'o, Sichuan, Tsuiin, and Seiwan. Excelled in tea ceremony and incense, and had connections with Ueda Akinari and others. "Seiwan Chawa (Sencha Shiyoshu)", a collection of articles on Chinese sencha tea, published in 1756 (the 6th year of the Horeki era), had a great influence on the content of Akinari's "Seifu Sogen". In incense, he studied under Oguchi Kansui Hotaka of the Oie school. He added the Shino and Yonekawa schools to the Oie school to found the Oeda school (Iwata school). He published incense books such as "Oie School Incense Teaching 100 Articles" and "Incense Teaching Secrets". He also wrote "Gayumanroku", a guide to games and stationery.

江戸中期の煎茶家。香道大枝流の祖。本姓大江氏。岩田信安と称した。摂津の人。号は脩然翁,四川,釣隠,青湾など。茶の湯,香などに優れ,上田秋成らと交流。中国の煎茶に関する記事を集めて宝暦6(1756)年に板行された『青湾茶話(煎茶仕用集)』は,秋成による『清風瑣言』の内容構成に大きな影響を与えた。香道では御家流の大口含翠保高に師事。御家流に志野流と米川流を加味して大枝流(岩田流)を創設。香書として『御家流香道百ケ条』『香道秘伝』などを刊行した。また遊戯,文具の解説書『雅遊漫録』などがある。
