An ancient Greek Stoic philosopher. Born in Rhodes, he taught in Athens and Rome. He was devoted to the ideas of Plato and Aristotle, and made major revisions to the teachings of early Stoicism, founding the eclectic Middle Stoicism. He was greatly responsible for instilling Stoic thought in Roman aristocrats. Here too, he came to preach active virtues (nobility and compassion) more suited to politicians and military men, instead of the traditional Stoic virtue of passiveness (apatheia).
