A general term for the prehistoric cultures that developed in eastern North America during the Alluvial Epoch in a natural environment that is roughly the same as today. It is placed between the Paleo-Indian culture and the Woodland culture, and dates to between 8000 and 1000 BC. The Archaic culture is characterized by diverse subsistence activities such as hunting, gathering, and fishing in the forests, river basins, and coastal areas of eastern North America. Major cultural elements include large stone tools such as stone axes and wedges for dealing with forests, and millstones, stone plates, grinding stones, and stone containers for processing plant-based foods.
