During World War I, the company expanded into forestry and metalworking, becoming a financial conglomerate. The last owner, Pavel Pavlovich Ryabushinskii (1871-1924), was a representative figure of the leftist shift of the bourgeoisie along with Konovalov. He published the newspaper "Russian Morning" and served as chairman of the Moscow War Industrial Committee. His brother Nikolai was the publisher of the symbolist literary magazine "The Golden Fleece."
