A town in Ito District, northern Wakayama Prefecture. The main settlements of Myoji and Kaseda are in the Kinokawa River basin in the central part of the prefecture, and the Wakayama Line runs through the town. The town is mainly agricultural, with fruit cultivation being particularly popular, including mandarin oranges, persimmons, peaches, and grapes. There is also a mandarin orange canning industry, and sake and soy sauce brewing. The mountainous area in the south is part of the Koya-Ryujin Quasi-National Park. In 2004, the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range were registered on the World Heritage List (Nyutsuhime Shrine, Koyasan-cho Ishimichi). 和歌山県北部,伊都(いと)郡の町。中部の紀ノ川流域に主集落の妙寺,笠田(かせだ)があり,和歌山線が通じる。農業が主で,特にミカン,カキ,モモ,ブドウなど果樹栽培が盛ん。ミカン缶詰工業,清酒,しょうゆの醸造業も行われる。南部の山地一帯は高野竜神国定公園に属する。2004年紀伊山地の霊場と参詣道が世界遺産条約の文化遺産リストに登録された(丹生都比売神社,高野山町石道)。2005年10月伊都郡花園村を編入。151.69km2。1万8230人(2010)。
