Chlorite - aensosanen (English spelling) chlorite

Chlorite - aensosanen (English spelling) chlorite

A salt produced when the hydrogen in chlorous acid (HClO2 ) is replaced by a metal. It is represented by the general formula M I ClO2 . When chlorine dioxide is reacted with an alkali hydroxide, chlorite is obtained along with chlorate.

2ClO2 +2OH -
―→ ClO2- + ClO3- + H2O
Also, when it reacts with alkali peroxide, only chlorite is obtained.

2ClO2 + HO2- + OH-
- > 2ClO2- + O2 + H2O
Generally, they are colorless solids that explode when heated or struck. Alkali metal salts dissolve in water, but salts of silver, lead, etc. are less soluble. Alkaline aqueous solutions are stable in the dark, but decompose in acid to produce chlorine dioxide and chlorides. Acidic solutions of sodium salts are used as bleaching agents for paper, pulp, etc. Oxidation titration using a standard solution of chlorite is called chlorite titration, and is used for the quantitative determination of sulfite, arsenous acid, and organic matter.
