Kusha grass - Kushasou

…A plant used in various ways in Indian religious ceremonies and considered sacred. It is also called kuśa grass. Eragrostis cynosuroides is a representative example, but various similar plants have been used depending on the era and region. Its purifying power (the ability to ward off evil powers) is particularly emphasized, and in Vedic rituals it is used in ceremonies to purify the ceremonial grounds and ceremonial fires, as a filter to purify soma and ghee, as a broom to sweep the ceremonial grounds, and as a seat for plates to invite the gods and offer offerings. It is also important to use it as a talisman (woven into bracelets) from the magic spells of the Atharva-Veda to modern folklore.

…インドの宗教儀礼の中でさまざまに用いられ，聖草とされる植物。クシャkuśa草とも呼ばれる。代表例としてEragrostis cynosuroidesが同定されるが，時代，地方の差によりさまざまな類似の植物が利用されてきた。特に浄化力(悪しき力をはらう作用)が強調され，ベーダの祭式では祭場，祭火にまいてこれを清め，また祭具に加工されソーマや酥油(ギー)を清める濾過器として，祭場を掃き清める箒として，神々を勧請し供物をささげる皿を置くための座としてなど，さまざまに用いられる一方，《アタルバ･ベーダ》の呪法から現代の民俗の中にまで見られる護符としての使用法(編んで腕輪にする)も重要である。…
