A scholar of the Kegon sect in the Nara period. His birth and death years are unknown. He was also written as Shinsho. Old biographies of the Kegon sect, such as the Ichijo Kaishinron, refer to him as a "Seikyū student," who studied in Silla and learned the Kegon doctrine. After returning to Japan, he lived at Daian-ji Temple in Ukyo, Heijō. At the request of Roben, who was promoting the Kegon sect, he lectured on the 60 volumes of the Kegon Sutra (old translation) at Kinsho-ji Temple for three years from October 740 (Tenpyō 12), instructing many scholars such as Jikun, Kagenin, and Genchi, and making a great contribution to the doctrinal research that would later lead to the construction of the Great Buddha of Vairocana at Todaiji Temple. There is a theory that he replaced Roben as the founder of the Kegon sect in Japan, but his secular surname is unclear. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
