Poet and playwright. Born in Tokyo. Older brother of Mikihiko. Studied at Meiji University after attending Dokkyo Junior High School. Loved poetry from childhood, and published poems in "Myojo". In 1909 (Meiji 42), he founded the magazine "Roof Garden" with Kinoshita Mokutaro and Kitahara Hakushu. He wrote plays under the influence of Ibsen, and his play "Demon of Pleasure" (1910) was performed at the Jiyugeki Theater, attracting attention as a playwright. He switched from aestheticism to realism, but his most famous works are the play "Hunger and Thirst" (1915) and the cultural history play "Great Buddha's Opening of the Eyes" (1920). In the 1920s, he joined the Ichimuraza Theatre, and in 1934 (Showa 9), he became an advisor to the Shinkyo Theater Company with Akita Ujaku, and became an important elder in the new theater world.
