…The word consort probably originates from the early Italian concerto, which was a simple ensemble of voices and instruments, but in the 17th century it was used to refer to an ensemble of different instruments, or was found in the title of a collection of music for such an ensemble. Today, the general classification is that of a whole consort, which is made up of instruments of the same family (such as the viol), and a broken consort, which is made up of instruments of different families (such as the viol, violin, lute, and woodwinds), but the terminology used at the time was inconsistent and somewhat unclear. Consorts reached their peak during the Elizabethan and James I eras, but gradually fell out of use at the end of the century, when the French-style orchestral style in theater music began to gain popularity. …
