Broken Consort

Today, the general classification is that of a whole consort, which is made up of instruments of the same family (such as the viol), and a broken consort, which is made up of instruments of different families (such as the viol, violin, lute, and woodwinds), but the terminology used at the time was inconsistent and somewhat unclear. Consorts reached their peak during the Elizabethan and James I eras, but gradually fell out of use at the end of the century, when the French-style orchestral style in theater music began to gain popularity. …
