Born: December 29, 1695 in Valenciennes Died July 25, 1736. French painter in Paris. His father was a decorative artist, and he went to Paris in 1713 to study under his older brother, JA Watteau. In 1728 he became an Academician. Although he did not stay with Watteau for long, he was one of the best followers of Watteau's "fête galantes" (elegant banquets), and painted rococo-style fantasies, country gatherings of the bourgeoisie, and female bathers. His major work is "The Fair at Bezons" (c. 1733, Metropolitan Museum of Art). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
