A spring-sown annual plant of the Asteraceae family suitable for flower beds and potted plants. Also known as ageratum. There are 30 species in the ageratum genus found in tropical and North America, but the one that has been developed as a horticultural plant is ageratum, which is found from Mexico to Peru. It has heart-shaped leaves, soft hairs on the stems and leaves, and many branches that produce purple flower heads 2 cm in diameter at the ends of the branches in autumn. The flowers have no petals and are all tubular, but the soft purple color of the flowers is due to the color and shape of the many long pistils.

花壇や鉢植えに適したキク科の春まき一年草。オオカッコウアザミともいう。カッコウアザミ属は熱帯アメリカから北アメリカに30種もあるが，園芸品として改良されたのはメキシコからペルーにかけて分布するオオカッコウアザミで，葉は心臓形，茎や葉に軟毛があり，数多く分枝して秋には枝先に直径2cmの紫色の頭状花をつける。花には花弁がなく管状花ばかりであるが，この花がふんわりと紫色に見えるのは長い多数のめしべの色と形による。
