A congenital abnormality in which the left and right kidneys are fused at the bottom, forming a horseshoe shape. It is the second most common kidney malformation after duplication of the renal pelvis, occurring in 1 in every 500 to 2000 people. There are various types of fused kidneys, but the horseshoe shape is the most common. Although it is often asymptomatic, it is often accompanied by hydronephrosis, stones, and pyelonephritis. It can also cause chronic dull abdominal pain, lower back pain, constipation, and diarrhea. A condition accompanied by these symptoms is also called horseshoe nephropathy.
