Niagari Shinnai - Niagari Shinnai

A popular song from the end of the Edo period. It means that a mournful melody like Shinnai is performed in a Niagari tune. In principle, it is a short piece consisting of four lines in a 7-5 rhythm, and there are countless lyrics. Even today, songs such as "Akudomezu to soko hasetase" and "Sumida no hotori" are often sung. In some cases, such as "Utsubozaru," a passage from Tokiwazu is sung. It is said to have been sung from the early 1800s (around the Bunka and Bunsei eras), but judging from existing songbooks, it seems that the heyday was just after Perry's arrival in Japan (1853).

江戸末期の流行歌。新内のように哀調を帯びた旋律を、二上りの調子で演奏するという意。原則として七五調四句からなる小曲で、歌詞は無数。今日でも「悪どめせずとそこ放せ」や「隅田のほとり」がよく歌われる。「靭猿(うつぼざる)」のように、常磐津(ときわず)の一節を歌い込む場合もある。1800年代初頭（文化・文政ごろ）から歌い出されたというが、現存の歌本からみると、ペリー来航（1853）直後が最盛期のようである。
