[Died] October 31, 1991. New York American theater producer and director. His real name was Papirofsky. In 1954, he organized the New York Shakespeare Festival with the aim of presenting free performances of Shakespeare's plays. After acquiring an outdoor theater in Central Park in 1962, he established a summer performance schedule and continued to lead the festival until 1991. In 1967, he opened the Public Theater by renovating a former city library, and released works such as Hair (1967) and A Chorus Line (1975), providing opportunities for many actors and young playwrights. His proactive approach, political power, and planning skills made him one of the leading producers in contemporary American theater. He also served as artistic director of Lincoln Center's theater department from 1973 to 1977.

アメリカの演劇プロデューサー，演出家。本姓 Papirofsky。 1954年シェークスピア劇の無料上演を目指してニューヨーク・シェークスピア・フェスティバルを組織。 62年セントラルパークに野外劇場を得てからは夏期公演を定着させ，91年まで主宰をつとめた。また 1967年には元市立図書館を改装してパブリック・シアターを開場し，『ヘアー』 Hair (1967) ，『コーラスライン』A Chorus Line (75) などを世に出し，多くの俳優や若手劇作家にチャンスを与えた。その積極的行動力，政治力，企画力によって，現代アメリカ演劇界を代表するプロデューサーといわれた。 73～77年リンカーン・センター演劇部門の芸術監督もつとめた。
