This refers to food that is primarily packaged in plastic film. It ranges from dry foods such as rice crackers and instant noodles, to frozen foods that are stored at low temperatures, and foods with a high moisture content such as tofu and boiled noodles. Transparent plastic film allows the contents to be seen, allows printing to be done freely, does not add bulk to the packaging, is less likely to leak, and is convenient for transportation, and, together with the use of preservatives, has revolutionized food sales. Various types of plastic film are used for packaging, including polyethylene, cellophane, and polypropylene. Each film alone is permeable to gas and water vapor and is sensitive to heat, so various types of film are sometimes laminated two or three times (thin films are bonded together) or aluminum is bonded to the film. Recently, there has been talk of a need to reconsider this in light of waste pollution.
