Ibn Sa'īd

Arab historian, poet, and geographer of Andalusian descent. Born near Granada, he studied in Seville. In 1241, he set out on a pilgrimage to Mecca with his father, staying in Cairo along the way and meeting many scholars. It is said that his "Beautiful Book of the Maghreb" caused a great sensation at that time. The book is a history of the Maghreb and Andalus from the Islamic conquest to 1135. In 1249, he left Cairo for the pilgrimage to Mecca, and traveled to various cities in Iraq and Syria. On the way back, he stayed in Tunis (1254/55) and served the Hafsid king Mustansir, but in 67 he set out again eastward, passing through Iran and returning to Tunis, where he died.

アンダルスのアラブ系の歴史家，詩人，地理学者。グラナダ近郊で生まれ，セビリャで学ぶ。1241年父親とともにメッカ巡礼に出発，途中カイロに滞在し，多くの学者と接する。その時，彼の《美しきマグリブの書》が大評判になったといわれる。同書はイスラムの征服から1135年までのマグリブ･アンダルス史である。1249年，カイロを去りメッカ巡礼を果たし，さらにイラクやシリアの各都市を旅し，帰途チュニスに滞在(1254∥55)，ハフス朝の王ムスタンシルに仕えたが，67年再び東方へ出発し，イランを経てチュニスにもどり，同地で没した。
