1213‐86 Arab historian, poet, and geographer of Andalusian descent. Born near Granada, he studied in Seville. In 1241, he set out on a pilgrimage to Mecca with his father, staying in Cairo along the way and meeting many scholars. It is said that his "Beautiful Book of the Maghreb" caused a great sensation at that time. The book is a history of the Maghreb and Andalus from the Islamic conquest to 1135. In 1249, he left Cairo for the pilgrimage to Mecca, and traveled to various cities in Iraq and Syria. On the way back, he stayed in Tunis (1254/55) and served the Hafsid king Mustansir, but in 67 he set out again eastward, passing through Iran and returning to Tunis, where he died.
