(1) A ship's hatch or access point. A hole in the deck for loading and unloading cargo or for people to enter and exit. A hole for loading and unloading cargo into a ship's hold is called a cargo hatch, and to prevent seawater from flowing into the ship, a hatch coaming of sufficient height is provided around the hatch and the top is covered with a hatch cover. (2) In architectural terms, it means (a) an opening in the floor or roof of a building, (b) the lower door of an opening that opens and closes with two doors, one above and one below, and (c) an opening used from both sides of a partition shelf. It is often used between the kitchen and dining room to pass tableware, or in a hospital pharmacy to pass medicines.
