A prehistoric site located in the riverbed of the Sebir River, a tributary of the Euphrates River, about 13 km southwest of Uruk in southern Iraq. The German Uruk-Warka Expedition conducted trial excavations in the winters of 1937-38 and 1938-39 and discovered a type of painted pottery that had not been known in southern Mesopotamia until then. The pottery has thick, wide geometric patterns painted in dark purple on a pale yellow clay body, and attention was drawn to its similarity to the painted pottery of Halaf and Arpatia, but it was the results of excavations at Eridu in 47-49 that established its chronological position in southern Mesopotamia.
