Queen of Sheba

Japanese:
Queen of Sheba

A character in the Old Testament (1 Kings, Chapter 10). Around 1000 B.C., the Queen of Sheba heard of King Solomon's fame and paid him a courtesy visit. Sheba was a country located at the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, near what is now Yemen. At that time, Solomon established a shipyard in a town called Ezion-geber on the Red Sea coast, and was also active in trade in this region. The queen asked him many questions and tried to test him, but he answered all of them. She saw the depth of Solomon's wisdom and the prosperity of his kingdom, and presented him with a huge amount of treasure. The gifts included spices, gold, and precious stones. In addition, a ship carrying gold, sandalwood, and precious stones from Ophir, a country neighboring Sheba to the north, belonged to Hiram, King of Tyre. Here we can get a glimpse of the maritime trade of that time.
