Hermaphrodite - Hermaphrodite

Japanese: 両性具有 - りょうせいぐゆう
Hermaphrodite - Hermaphrodite
To have both feminine and masculine qualities. Strictly speaking, there is androgynous and hermaphroditos, the former referring to gender (cultural characteristics) and the latter to sex (genitalia), but the two are often used interchangeably. Beginning with Plato's Symposium, androgynous has appeared in literature on religion, philosophy, literature, psychology, medicine, and other fields since ancient times. In feminism and lesbian/gay theory in particular, androgynous images are used to represent the repositioning of gender roles or liberation from gender roles. For example, in the 19th century, it was believed that the body of a male homosexual was inhabited by a female soul, and the body of a female homosexual was inhabited by a male soul. In Woolf's A Room of One's Own, the ideal artist is depicted as hermaphrodite. These images gained strong support again in the 1970s, and in the 1990s, they have also attracted attention in the form of cross-dressing.
