The method for calculating the amount of gold-stipend bonds issued to the nobility was stipulated in the Gold-stipend Bond Issuance Ordinance, but the outline is as follows: In the case of permanent stipends (a stipend paid to a family in perpetuity for generations), those with a stipend of less than 100 yen (which had been changed to a fixed amount in cash in September 1875, i.e., gold-stipend) were divided into six classes, and 7% interest-bearing bonds were issued in an amount equivalent to 11.5 to 14 years' worth of their stipend, those with a stipend between 100 and 1,000 yen were divided into 13 classes, and 6% interest-bearing bonds were issued in an amount equivalent to 7.75 to 11 years' worth of their stipend, and those with a stipend of 1,000 yen or more were divided into 11 classes, and 5% interest-bearing bonds were issued in an amount equivalent to 5.5 to 7 years' worth of their stipend. Those on lifetime stipends (family stipends paid for one generation only) were given half the amount of the permanent stipend, while those on annual stipends were given six levels of government bonds depending on the length of the term, each amounting to 15 to 40 percent of the permanent stipend. *Some of the terminology explanations that refer to "family stipend" are listed below.
