A bird of the family Coraciiformes and family Bee-eater (illustration). The bee-eater is a beautiful bird, which explains its English name, rainbow-bird. It is about 23 cm long. Its overall color is green with a bluish tinge, with a yellowish-brown throat, head and back of the neck, and a black eye line and breast ring. Its tail feathers are black, and the two central feathers are long, especially in males. It breeds throughout most of Australia, and most of them migrate to New Guinea, the Sunda Islands, the Solomon Islands and other places to spend the winter. In Japan, only one bird was recorded in 1904 on Miyako Island in Okinawa Prefecture.

ブッポウソウ目ハチクイ科の鳥（イラスト）。ハチクイは，rainbow‐birdという英名もあるように美しい鳥である。全長約23cm。全体に青色を帯びた緑色で，のどと頭上から後頸（こうけい）部は黄褐色，過眼線と胸輪は黒い。尾羽は黒く，中央羽2枚は長く，とくに雄では長くのびている。オーストラリアのほぼ全域で繁殖し，その大部分はニューギニア，スンダ列島，ソロモン諸島などに渡り越冬する。日本では，1904年に沖縄県の宮古島でただ1羽採集された記録がある。
