Italian film. Excelsa. 1946. Directed by Roberto Rossellini, with screenplays by Rossellini, F. Fellini, S. Amidi, and M. Pariello. A representative work of Italian neorealism that surprised and moved people all over the world after World War II. It depicts episodes in six locations: Sicily, Naples, Rome, Florence, a monastery, and the Po River, in accordance with the progress of the Allied forces' advance northward from their landing in Sicily in 1943. The interactions between the Allied forces and the Italian people, and the tragic fight of the resistance, are recreated in a documentary style by non-professional actors. As a people's epic film in the documentary style, it is a groundbreaking work in the history of cinema, on a par with Battleship Potemkin.
