Ezo striped white butterfly (English name: green-veined white)

A butterfly belonging to the family Pieridae, order Lepidoptera, class Insecta. It is also called Ezo Striped White. It is distributed throughout Japan, Sakhalin, the Korean Peninsula, China, Europe, and northern North America. In Hokkaido, it is more commonly seen than the closely related White Striped. Its wingspan is about 45 mm, and the markings vary significantly between sexes and seasonal types. It is similar to the White Striped White, but is generally slightly smaller. It occurs two to three times a year in Hokkaido, and more frequently in warm areas in the southwestern part of Japan. The first generation occurs in spring earlier than the White Striped White. The larvae feed on the leaves of plants in the Brassicaceae family, but in the southwestern part of Japan, they feed on plants of the same family, such as Suzushirosou and Hakusan Hatazao, and have a narrower range of food plants than the White Striped White. It overwinters in the pupal stage.

昆虫綱鱗翅(りんし)目シロチョウ科に属するチョウ。エゾスジグロチョウともよばれる。日本各地および樺太(からふと)（サハリン）、朝鮮半島、中国からヨーロッパにかけてと、北アメリカ北部に分布する。北海道では近縁のスジグロシロチョウより普通にみられる。はねの開張45ミリメートル内外で、雌雄および季節型により斑紋(はんもん)の違いが著しい。スジグロシロチョウに似ているが、それより一般にやや小形である。北海道では年2～3回の発生、日本の南西部の暖地ではさらに発生回数を増す。春の第1化の発生はスジグロシロチョウよりも早い。幼虫はアブラナ科植物の葉を食べるが、日本の南西部では同科のスズシロソウ、ハクサンハタザオなどを食草とし、スジグロシロチョウに比べて食草選択の範囲が狭い。蛹態(ようたい)で越冬する。
