While Pope Callistus I (reigned 217-222) tried to ease the political conflict between Rome and Byzantium, Cyprian presented the idea of ​​a universal church (ekklēsia katholikē), claiming that the unity of the church based on the primacy of the Church of Rome was the first priority. This was the beginning of the Western papacy in opposition to the Eastern caliphate.
