A limestone plateau located in the center of the Kibi Plateau in western Okayama Prefecture. Most of it belongs to Niimi City, and a part belongs to Maniwa City. At an altitude of 350-500 meters, it stretches about 18 kilometers east to west and 7 kilometers north to south, making it the second largest limestone plateau after Akiyoshidai in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Karst topography such as dolines and Karenfeldts has developed on the plateau, and there are limestone caves such as Makido, Ikurado, and Himesakakanachiana, which have all been designated as natural monuments of the prefecture. It is also included in the Takahashi River Upstream Prefectural Natural Park. The plateau is mainly used as fields, where tobacco and buckwheat are cultivated, and fruit trees have also been introduced. The limestone layer is 1,100 meters thick, and from the Lower Carboniferous period, small foraminifera fossils from the Permian period have been found in Iwamoto, Shoyama, Kanigawa, and Maki, and Carboniferous fossils have been found in Nagoe and Otari. There are also many unique plants commonly called limestone plants. [Shogo Yuihama] [References] | | |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
