Hachiku - Hachiku

Japanese:
Hachiku - Hachiku

A type of bamboo of the grass family (APG classification: Poaceae). It can reach a height of 20 meters and a diameter of about 10 centimeters. It has two nodes, which is the same as Madake, but while Madake's culm is dark green, Hachiku's is whitish or gray-green. This is why it is called Hachiku (light bamboo). The skin of the bamboo shoots is pale pink with scattered long hairs, and does not have the black spots of Madake. The leaves are lanceolate, 9 to 13 centimeters long and about 1.5 centimeters wide. The hairs on the upper edge of the leaf sheath stand almost upright. It was introduced from China long ago and is widely cultivated from southern Hokkaido to Okinawa. The culms are strong and can be split into small pieces, so they are used to make the frames of tea whisks and lanterns. The culms of the parent species, black bamboo, are initially green and turn black-purple after 2 to 3 years.
