A turtle of the family Dermatidae in the order Testudins, class Reptilia. It inhabits tropical to subtropical oceans in the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans, and is the largest species of extant sea turtle. It has great swimming ability and can be seen in tropical to subarctic waters by riding ocean currents. It has been caught not only along the Pacific coast of Japan, but also along the Japan Sea coast and around Hokkaido, but not in large numbers. It is an offshore sea turtle that rarely comes close to the coast except during the egg-laying season. When fully grown, it can reach a carapace length of 2 meters and weigh over 650 kilograms. Its carapace is covered with thin, smooth skin, which is quite different from other sea turtles. It also has seven prominent longitudinal ridges on its back, the central one of which reaches the rear end of the tail. It is a carnivorous sea turtle that feeds exclusively on large planktonic organisms such as jellyfish and salps. Its eggs are eaten, but its meat is rarely used.
