Bachelor - John Batchelor

Bachelor - John Batchelor

British missionary and Ainu researcher. Born in Acfield, Sussex, south of London. In 1877 (Meiji 10), he came to Japan as a missionary of the Church of England (Anglican Church) and preached in Hokkaido. He was shocked by the discriminatory and prejudiced view of the Ainu people in Japan at the time, which prompted him to start evangelizing the Ainu and cultivated many followers. He also established a missionary school (Airin School, 1888) with the aim of providing Christian education to the Ainu, an Ainu medical facility called the Ainu Treatment Hospital (1892), and a boarding house for Ainu children called the Ainu Protection School (1922), contributing to education and medical care for the Ainu. However, Batchelor's activities were also criticized by the Ainu, as Hokuto Iboshi wrote in later years: "I lament that there is nothing to see in this kotan after fifty years of evangelization." Batchelor also made outstanding achievements in the study of Ainu language and culture, and is considered one of the pioneers of Ainu studies in Japan. He wrote many books, including "Ezo Konjaku Monogatari" (1884), which introduces the Ainu lifestyle and culture, and "Ezo-Ei Santai Jisho" (1889), an Ainu English-Japanese dictionary. He returned to Japan at the outbreak of World War II. His former home is now used as the Batchelor Memorial Hall at the Hokkaido University Faculty of Agriculture Museum. Batchelor Yaeko, a poet who wrote the collection of poems "To a Young Kindred," was his adopted daughter.
