Honorius III

…When he accompanied Bishop Didacus to Rome, he came into contact with the spirit and movement of the Cathars (Albigensians) that had spread to southern France, and he aimed to educate them. He became an itinerant preacher of the truth of the faith, following the poverty of Christ in the Gospel. In early 1215, he established a training school for evangelical preachers in Toulouse and planned a new monastic order, which was finally approved by Pope Honorius III (reigned 1216-27) on December 22, 1216. Unlike Benedictine monasteries, this order rapidly developed throughout Western Europe as a mendicant order that promoted church service through apostolic activities and communication with the people without the vow of settling in a monastery, under the jurisdiction of a central governing body under a general chapter and a general superior, and played a part in the evangelization of the Church. …
