Indian communist and politician. He began by joining Gandhi's nationalist movement, then joined the Indian National Congress and the Socialist Party, before joining the Communist Party of India in 1939. In 1957, he led the first communist state government in Kerala as chief minister. He is known as a theorist in the Indian communist movement through his numerous writings. After the Communist Party of India split in 1964, he joined the independent Communist Party of India (Marxist faction) and promoted a course that was in sharp opposition to the Indian National Congress, becoming chief minister of the state government again in 1967.
