It also refers to short stories such as small talk, small talk, or whispered stories or secret stories. Hanashibon, one of the literary genres of the Edo period, is divided into early and late periods, and refers to light-hearted stories that were mainly told in Kamigata (Kamigata) in the early period, and otoshibanashi, which was performed in late Edo. This term seems to have originated from the mid-Meiji period onwards, when short stories used as opening or closing parts of rakugo were called kobanashi in contrast to long stories performed by mouth. In the Edo period, they were generally called otoshibanashi (rakugo, rakugo, rakugo, rakugo, shofu, etc.). Kobanashibon books containing these Edo kobanashi became very popular in the An'ei period (1772-81), starting with "Kanokomochi" in 1772 (Meiwa 9). Compared to the traditional leisurely, light-hearted, explanatory stories in the "It says..." style, these stories end with a definitive statement and are characterized by shorter, more concise expressions; they are not simply humorous tales; the author's sharp observations and observations are their lifeblood; they are light, witty, and sophisticated literature.

小さな話、ちょっとした世間話などの短い話、あるいは、ひそひそ話、ないしょ話のような小声での話などもさすが、ほかに江戸時代の文学ジャンルの一つである噺本(はなしぼん)を前期と後期に分け、前期の上方(かみがた)中心の軽口咄に対し、後期江戸で行われた落語（おとしばなし）をさしてもいう。この呼称は、明治中期以降において、口演の落語の長い話に対して、落語のマクラやクスグリなどに使った短い話を小咄と称したことに始まるようである。江戸時代にはおとしばなし（落噺、落咄、落語、落話、笑府などの字をあてる）と一般にはよばれていた。この江戸小咄を収めた小咄本は1772年（明和9）の『鹿子餅(かのこもち)』を皮切りに安永(あんえい)期（1772～81）に大流行をみせる。従来の「……と云(い)うた」形式の説明体ののんびりとした軽口(かるくち)咄に比べ、話末を会話の言い切りで終わらせ、話もより短く簡潔な表現が特色であり、単なる滑稽譚(こっけいたん)ではなく、作者の鋭いうがちや見立てがその生命であり、軽妙洒脱(しゃだつ)な通(つう)の文学である。
