Nokogiriyama - Nokogiriyama

Japanese: 鋸山 - のこぎりやま

This mountain is located in the southern part of Chiba Prefecture, straddling Futtsu City and Kyonan Town in Awa County. Facing the Uchibo coast, it has an elevation of 330 meters. It is made of Tertiary sandy tuff, and as its name suggests, it has a saw-like shape. On the northern side of the foot of the mountain, there is the remains of a quarry where Boso stone was once cut, forming a vertical cliff. Near the summit, there is the Jushu Ichibandai, from which Tokyo Bay, the Miura Peninsula, and the Boso mountain range can be seen. There is also Nihon-ji Temple, founded by the monk Gyoki, and a group of Buddhist statues, including the Sengohyaku Rakan and the Hyakushaku Kannon. A ropeway has been built from Hamakanaya to the summit, and a toll road is also available. It belongs to the Minami-Boso Quasi-National Park, and is a prefecture-designated Place of Scenic Beauty. It is the center of tourism in the Uchibo region, and Hamakanaya is directly connected to Kurihama (Kanagawa Prefecture) by ferry.

Nokogiriyama Ropeway
It connects the northern foothills of Mt. Nokogiri, towering over Tokyo Bay, to the summit. The photo shows Kanaya Port in Futtsu City as seen from inside the gondola. Mt. Nokogiri, which belongs to the Minami-Boso Quasi-National Park, is known as a scenic spot for its oddly shaped rocks and stones, and at the summit there is an observation deck jutting out from the cliff called "Hell's View." 千葉県南部、富津市(ふっつし)と安房(あわ)郡鋸南町(きょなんまち)にまたがる山。内房海岸に面し、標高330メートル。第三紀砂質凝灰岩からなり、その名のごとく鋸の歯を立てたような山容を呈する。山麓(さんろく)の北側にかつて房州石(ぼうしゅういし)を切り出した石切場跡があり、垂直に切り立った断崖(だんがい)となっている。頂上付近に十州一覧台があって、東京湾、三浦半島、房総の山並みを展望でき、僧行基(ぎょうき)創建の日本寺、千五百羅漢や百尺観音(かんのん)などの仏像群がある。浜金谷(はまかなや)から頂上へロープウェーが架設され、また有料登山道路も開かれている。南房総国定公園に属し、県指定名勝でもある。内房観光の中心地をなし、浜金谷はフェリーで久里浜（神奈川県）と直結している。
