Dutch botanist. Educated at the Universities of Leiden, Wurzburg, and Heidelberg. Professor at the University of Amsterdam. Studied under J. von Sachs and W. Hofmeister, and researched plant physiology and genetics. With regard to genetic phenomena, he proposed the intracellular pangenism (1889), which was an expansion of Darwin's pangenism. His achievements include the rediscovery of Mendel's laws (1900) and the proposal of the mutation theory based on crossbreeding experiments with evening primrose (1901), and played an important role in forming the concept of genes.

オランダの植物学者。ライデン大学，ビュルツブルク大学，ハイデルベルク大学に学ぶ。アムステルダム大学教授。ザックスJ.von SachsやホフマイスターW.Hofmeisterらに師事し，植物生理学，遺伝学を研究。遺伝現象に関してはダーウィンのパンゲン説を発展させた細胞内パンゲン説を提唱(1889)。メンデル法則の再発見(1900)，オオマツヨイグサの交雑実験にもとづく突然変異説の提唱(1901)などの業績をあげ，遺伝子概念形成に重要な役割を果たした。
