1848‐1935 Dutch botanist. Educated at the Universities of Leiden, Wurzburg, and Heidelberg. Professor at the University of Amsterdam. Studied under J. von Sachs and W. Hofmeister, and researched plant physiology and genetics. With regard to genetic phenomena, he proposed the intracellular pangenism (1889), which was an expansion of Darwin's pangenism. His achievements include the rediscovery of Mendel's laws (1900) and the proposal of the mutation theory based on crossbreeding experiments with evening primrose (1901), and played an important role in forming the concept of genes.
