This is the site of a Buddhist temple located south of Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan. Most of the construction dates back to the 3rd century, when the Kushan dynasty flourished, but construction seems to have continued until the 8th century. Xuanzang's Records of the Western Regions of the Great Tang Dynasty states that there was a fortress called Kila on the southern border of the country of Nagarahara (Jalalabad), which corresponds to Hadda. Xuanzang wrote that there was a double tower in this fortress, and a stupa (round tower) containing the top bone of a Tathagata. The site was surveyed by the British in the 19th century, but full-scale excavation was carried out by a French team in the 1920s, and the surveys of the Tapakalan temple site, Chahiri Gundi temple site, and Gar Nao temple site by the orientalist Fouché and others are well known. Many temples, stupas and stucco statues have been discovered, and the chronology of the stupas at Hadda has made a major contribution to the study of Gandharan architectural history.
