A village in Minamiaizu County in the southwest of Fukushima Prefecture. Population 2,041 (1995). Located in the Ina River basin, a tributary of the Tadami River, this mountain village is mostly made up of forest land. It has been designated a special heavy snow area. The Numata Highway runs along the Ina River, and Furumachi, in the center of the village, is a town that developed along this road. It is also a branch point to the Tajima area, and in the Middle Ages it was also the center of Inago. It has long been a producer of high-quality linen cloth called Ina Hosomi, and was a major local industry until sericulture became popular in the Meiji era, and a market was also established in the early modern period. Agriculture and forestry are the main industries, and the area has been designated as a new forestry structure improvement project, so efforts are being made to improve the forest land. 福島県南西部,南会津郡の村。人口2041(1995)。只見川支流の伊南川流域にあり,林野面積が大部分を占める山村。特別豪雪地帯に指定されている。伊南川沿いに沼田街道が通じ,中心の古町はこの街道に沿って発達した街村で,田島方面への分岐点にもあたり,中世は伊南郷の中心でもあった。古くから伊南細見と称する良質の麻布の産地で,明治に入って養蚕が盛んとなるまで主要な地場産業であり,近世には市も開かれていた。基幹産業は農林業で,新林業構造改善事業の指定をうけ,林野の整備に力を入れている。
