One of the main issues in economics is to clarify how products, the results of production activities, are distributed to labor, capital, land, etc. in the form of income. This distribution of income to each production factor is called the functional distribution of income. In contrast, the same income distribution, but its distribution to individuals who own different production factors, is called the personal distribution of income. The subject of distribution theory is the former, while the latter is treated as a statistical study of income distribution.

生産活動の成果である生産物が，所得という形を経由して，労働，資本，土地などにどのように分配されるかを明らかにすることは，経済学の主要な課題の一つである。このような各生産要素への所得分配は，所得の機能的分配と呼ばれる。これに対し，同じ所得分配でも，異なった生産要素の所有者としての個人に対する分配は，所得の個人的分配と呼ばれる。分配理論の対象は前者であり，後者は所得分布の統計的研究として取り扱われている。
