An 1876 Bulgarian national uprising against Ottoman rule. The uprising was organized by the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Revolution, headquartered in Giurgiu, Romania, and was originally scheduled for May 1, but was brought forward to April 18 to avoid detection. It spread mainly to the south, drawing in the peasants and taking on an anti-feudal character, but due to a lack of weapons it was gradually suppressed by the Ottoman army, and finally surrendered on May 23 after resistance from Hristo Botev's army. 15,000 people were killed. The uprising failed, but Bulgaria gained autonomy two years later under the democratic "Tarnovo Constitution."
