Emperor Yuryaku

The 21st Emperor. He is said to have reigned in the latter half of the 5th century. He was the son of Emperor Ingyaku. His mother was Osakanoonakatsuhime-no-mikoto. His name was Oohatsusenowakatake-no-mikoto. According to the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, he executed Prince Mayuwa, who had murdered his older brother Emperor Anko, and then killed Emperor Richu's son Prince Ichinobe no Oshiha and others before ascending to the throne. He appointed Heguri no Omimatori as his minister, Otomo no Muraji Muroya and Mononobe no Muraji Me as his ministers, and made important use of immigrants, including the Hata and Han clans, to strengthen his government, and is considered to have been an autocratic monarch with great power. The Wa King Bu, who is written about in the Wakokuden section of the Song Shu, is thought to be Emperor Yuryaku, and is the pinnacle of the despotic and heroic character of the ancient emperors (→ Five Kings of Wa). However, in Korea, Goguryeo and Silla oppressed Baekje and Mimana around the time of Emperor Yuryaku, so the emperor often sent troops, but it became increasingly difficult to rule Korea. It is also said that during this period, weaving craftsmen such as Hanori and Kurehatori were welcomed from the state of Wu. He made his capital at Hatsuse Asakura Palace in Yamato and made Princess Kusakanohatabihime (Princess Tachibana) his empress. The Empress had no children, and after the death of the Emperor, Prince Shiraga (Emperor Seinei), born to Minister Katsuragi no Tsubura's daughter, Katsuragi no Karahime, and Prince Hoshikawa, born to Kibi clan's daughter, Wakahime, fought for the throne. The Imperial tomb is the Tajihi no Takashi no Hara no Misasagi in Shimaizumi, Habikino City, Osaka Prefecture.

第21代に数えられる天皇。5世紀後半に在位したとされる。允恭天皇の皇子。母はオサカノオオナカツヒメノミコト。名はオオハツセノワカタケノミコト。記紀によれば，同母兄の安康天皇を殺害した眉輪王（まゆわのおおきみ）を誅し，さらに履中天皇の皇子の市辺押磐皇子（いちのべのおしはのみこ）らをも殺して即位した。平群臣真鳥（へぐりのおみまとり）を大臣に，大伴連室屋と物部連目を大連とし，秦氏や漢氏をはじめ渡来人をも重く用いて政権の強化に努め，強大な権力をもった専制的君主であったとみられる。『宋書』倭国伝などに記された倭王武は，雄略天皇であると考えられ，古代天皇の専制的，英雄的性格の頂点に立っている（→倭の五王）。しかし朝鮮では，雄略天皇の前後から高句麗，新羅が百済および任那を圧迫したので，天皇はしばしば兵を送ったが，朝鮮の支配はしだいに困難となった。またこの代に呉の国から漢織，呉織（くれはとり）など機織りの技術者を迎え入れたと伝えられる。大和の泊瀬朝倉宮（はつせあさくらのみや）に都し，草香幡梭姫皇女（くさかのはたびひめのひめみこ。橘姫）を立てて皇后とした。皇后には子がなく，天皇の死後は葛城円（かつらぎのつぶら）大臣の娘，葛城韓媛（かつらぎのからひめ）の産んだ白髪皇子（清寧天皇）と，吉備氏の娘稚媛の産んだ星川皇子とが皇位を争った。陵墓は大阪府羽曳野市島泉の丹比高鷲原陵（たじひのたかわしのはらのみささぎ）。
