A bulbous plant of the Iridaceae family (APG classification: Iridaceae) planted in autumn. The plant looks similar to freesia, which is also in the Iridaceae family, and is also called Hozaki iris due to the shape of the flower. The leaves are sword-shaped and elongated, with vertical folds and dense hairs. Around April, a 20-30 cm tall flower stalk appears, and 10-12 flowers grow upward in a spike shape. The flower color is mostly purple, but there are also red, white, and pale yellowish white. Native to South Africa. It is cultivated as a potted plant or cut flower. It is propagated by bulb division or seedlings, and is planted in October in a sunny, well-drained location, covered with about 5 cm of soil. It can be grown outdoors in the Chubu region and west, but frost protection is required in the Kanto region. When the leaves begin to wither in summer, dig it up and either dry it well and store it, or drain the water in the pot and leave it until autumn.
