Batangas - Batangas (English spelling)

The capital of Batangas province in the southwest of Luzon, Philippines. It is located 110 km south of Manila. It has a population of 247,588 (2000). It is the commercial and transportation center of the Southern Tagalog region. A ferry runs to Mindoro Island. The surrounding area is an agricultural region on a volcanic plateau, producing rice, coconuts, fruit trees, coffee, and livestock. On the outskirts there is an oil refinery and a large power plant built with the cooperation of Japan. The residents speak Tagalog and are known for their strong sense of local pride, and played a major role during the anti-Spanish revolution.

フィリピン、ルソン島南西部にあるバタンガス州の州都。マニラの南方110キロメートルに位置する。人口24万7588(2000)。南タガログ地方の商業、交通の中心地。ミンドロ島へフェリーが通っている。付近は火山性台地の農業地帯で、水稲のほかココナッツ、果樹、コーヒーなどを産し、牧畜も行われる。郊外に石油精製工場や日本の協力を得た大型発電所がある。住民はタガログ語を話し、郷土意識の強さで知られ、反スペイン革命のとき大きな役割を果たした。
