Kaori Hosoki - Saiki Koi

A connoisseur of Edo during the late Edo period. His given name was Uroko, his pen name was Reiwa, and he was commonly known as Settsu Kuniya Tojiro (2nd generation). He went by the name Ichirindo, his haiku name was Sendou, and his mad names were Momokoen and Tsuru no Mon Hinakame. He was the son of Settsu Kuniya Tojiro Tatsuike, a sake merchant on the Yamashiro Riverbank in Shinbashi. He studied Confucianism under Kita Seiro, calligraphy under Matsumoto Tosai, and haiku under Houro and Itsen, and was given the title "Ume no Hon" by Seki Isan. He had a wide network of acquaintances, including haiku poets Zenzaian Eiki and Fuyue, actor Ichikawa Danjūrō IX, kyogen author Kawatake Mokuami, and gokan author Ryutei Taneka, as well as calligraphers, painters, and sumo wrestlers, and was known as Kikoe Konkibun for his great knowledge. He eventually lost his family fortune and retired to Samukawa in Chiba in his later years, where he died at the age of 49. Works that use Kay as a theme include Kanagaki Robun's "Sairai Ki Bunkaku Hanamachi," Akutagawa Ryunosuke's "Kodoku Jigoku," and Mori Ogai's "Hosoki Kay." <References> Mori Senzo's "Hosoki Kay" ("Mori Senzo Collected Works Continued," Volume 3)

幕末期の江戸の通人。名は鱗,字は冷和,通称は摂津国屋藤次郎(2代目)。一鱗堂と号し,俳号を仙塢,狂名を桃江園,鶴の門雛亀といった。新橋山城河岸の酒屋摂津国屋藤次郎竜池の子。儒学を北静廬に,書を松本董斎に,俳諧を鳳朗,逸淵に学び,関為山から「梅の本」の称を受けた。俳諧師の善哉庵永機・冬映,役者の9代目市川団十郎,狂言作者の河竹黙阿弥,合巻作者の柳亭種員,そのほか,書家,画工,関取などと広く交わり,大通をもってきこえ今紀文と称された。ついに家産を失い,晩年は千葉の寒川に逼塞し,49歳で没した。香以を題材にしたものに仮名垣魯文『再来紀文廓花街』,芥川竜之介『孤独地獄』,森鴎外『細木香以』がある。<参考文献>森銑三『細木香以』(『森銑三著作集続編』3巻)
