A town located 118km north of Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. Batalha means "battle" in Portuguese. In 1385, a battle for the survival of the country took place near Batalha, and later King João I of Portugal built a monastery here to commemorate the victory. Its official name is the Monastery of Our Lady of Victory (Santa Maria da Vitoria). Construction began in 1388 and continued until the 16th century, but it was left unfinished and is now a chapel. It is a mixture of Gothic, Manueline, and Renaissance styles. The King's Cloister in particular is a magnificent piece decorated in the Manueline style. This monastery was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1983.

ポルトガル，首都リスボンの北118kmにある町。バターリャとはポルトガル語で〈合戦〉の意。1385年，国の存亡をかけた戦いがバターリャ近郊であり，のちにポルトガル国王ジョアン１世が勝利を記念してこの地に修道院を建造。正式名は〈勝利の聖母マリア（サンタ・マリア・ダ・ビトリア）修道院〉。1388年に建設に着手し16世紀まで続いたが，未完のままで現在は礼拝堂になっている。ゴシック，マヌエル，ルネサンスと各時代の様式が混在。特に〈王の回廊〉はマヌエル様式の装飾が施された見事なもの。この修道院は1983年，世界文化遺産に登録。
